Why Are Standards So Important in BIM?
First, it’s essential to understand that Building Information Modelling (BIM) isn’t just about creating a 3D model.
BIM is a process that begins from the first idea of a project and continues through its entire lifecycle—even to demolition.
Unlike simple 3D visuals from tools like SketchUp or 3ds Max, a BIM model holds all the information that represents the real asset, including both geometry and detailed data about each element. This is why, when handed over for operations, it’s called an Asset Information Model—because it holds real value for the organization.
But here’s the challenge:
If poor or unstructured information goes into the model, it loses its purpose. Rubbish in, rubbish out.
This is where standards become critical.
Frameworks like ISO 19650 and PAS standards help ensure that:

Responsibilities are clear
Data is reliable and secure
